SWAN chooses EBSCO Discovery Service

This latest announcement regarding the selection of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) by SWAN in Illinois is notable for a few reasons. The installation will be another strong demonstration of our efforts to collaborate with our ILS partners in the public library market. The SWAN library patrons and staff will find it far easier to find the content they always had, but perhaps couldn't navigate to easily before. And finally, the steady growth in our EDS installations and increase in our number of everyday users in this market will strengthen our user research, further improving our interface and the overall Discovery experience in the future.

Ethnographic Observation: The Magic Wand of User Research

Last Halloween, as our kids joined in the neighborhood trick-or-treating marathon, the parents made small talk as we supervised from afar. When my husband spoke about our reading of the Harry Potter series with our children, one neighbor said his family had watched “one or two of the Potter movies”, and called them “just okay.” When my husband started to enthusiastically explain why the Harry Potter series was more than “just okay”, he suddenly stopped himself. Because the Harry Potter series, like every good story, has a beginning, middle, and end; and by sampling only a piece of the experience, it was easy to see how the richness and nuances of the entire Potter journey weren’t fully realized by our neighbor.
